A vented soffit pulls cool air in at the eave and pushes warm, damp attic air out at the ridge. Without that airflow, moisture condenses on the underside of your roof deck all winter, and you find out about it when the ceiling stains.

What bad soffit venting actually costs you
When an attic cannot vent, warm indoor air condenses on cold sheathing. Over a few winters that shows up as mould on the roof deck, wet insulation that no longer insulates, and shingles that curl and fail well before their rated life.
It also drives ice damming. Heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the roof, the meltwater refreezes at the cold eave, and the resulting dam pushes water back up under the shingles.
Aluminum or vinyl?
Both work well and both come in a good colour range. Aluminum is more rigid and shrugs off impact, which is worth having on low eaves and around shop doors. Vinyl costs less and will not dent.
Either way, replacing old painted wood soffit means you stop scraping and repainting the underside of your eaves every few years.

Without proper intake at the eave, your attic cannot exhaust moist air. That leads to condensation, mould, ice damming and premature shingle deterioration. Good soffit venting is the cheapest part of keeping a roof healthy.
Aluminum is more rigid and more impact resistant. Vinyl is less expensive and will not dent. Both are available vented and in a range of colours. We will recommend based on the eave height and exposure.
Yes. Swapping painted wood for aluminum or vinyl is one of our most common jobs, and it ends the repainting cycle.
We do both. If damage is limited to one bay or one elevation, a partial replacement is often the sensible call, though matching an older colour exactly is not always possible.
